Lewis Pies

“We like dealing with Sorbafreeze – nothing’s ever too much trouble for Michelle; and they are all a very helpful team”

Lewis Pies is a family owned and run company making pies, pasties, breads, and cakes since 1936 and trade in just about everything, from supplying supermarkets, cafes, chip shops, and government contracts.

In addition, Lewis Pies began selling their luxury Wilfred’s range of pies on a popular shopping channel in 2019 which garnered a great response. The company already had a relationship with Sorbafreeze, working with them on smaller projects over the years; but when demand began to grow, Jason Davies, buyer at Lewis Pies decided that they needed something different.

The team were keen to move away from using polystyrene boxes and contacted Sorbafreeze for advice on which direction to take moving forward. Lewis Pies wanted their packaging to focus on enhancing customer experience, particularly as they were now in partnership with a shopping channel which prides itself on this.

The conclusion of the consultation was that the team would benefit from Sorbafreeze’s Fastfill foil lined boxes and Hydratek pre hydrated blocks – this option would greatly reduce time spent on assembly and would free up storage space.

After extended transit tests both Lewis Pies and their counterparts at the shopping channel were more than happy with the result of Sorbafreeze’s recommendations. The products arrived safely through the courier service and the presentation looked as high end as their customers expected.

Jason told us:

“The customers love the whole thing – A printed box within the Fastfill Box, 2 or 3 freezer pads – using a courier, customers usually get it within 24 hours, it’s all part of the experience”

Speaking of their customers, he added:

“They love the experience from start to finish, and when it arrives it’s in good condition – it works for us…We get a lot of response from customers – if they like it, they tell us and people often compliment the packaging”

Lewis Pies were steadily busy over the Christmas period at the end of 2019, as their luxury mince pies proved exceedingly popular with customers of the shopping channel. When the COVID-19 global pandemic hit in the middle of March this year, demand skyrocketed.

With lockdown in place across the UK more consumers shifted their normal buying habits; gone were the days of perusing the aisles of the supermarket at their leisure. With more people spending the majority of their time at home, the audience for teleshopping grew immensely, meaning a major increase in business for the team at Lewis Pies.

Similarly, over this period, the team at Sorbafreeze seen a spike in enquiries from both new and existing customers. At this time, the team at Lewis Pies needed more from their temperature-controlled packaging supplier than ever before; Jason stated:

“We like dealing with Sorbafreeze – nothing’s ever too much trouble for Michelle; and they are all a very helpful team… We have never had a time where we’ve been let down…a really good company to deal with”

We Are Proud of What We Do

So Are Our Clients

Carwyn Adams from Caws Cenarth points out “We aim to keep our products below 5°C. As we use non-refrigerated overnight couriers to transport our orders, we send our cheese out in purpose made insulated boxes layered with Sorbafreeze sheets to ensure the product reaches our customers in top condition. We know it works as our clients probe the products upon receipt.”

Dan Hendry of Scotprime commented “We’ve tried everything else, even 1 litre milk bottles filled with frozen water which equals 1kg of water but when you store water there is always the risk of typhoid or Cholera. With Sorbafreeze we know that by the time the customer gets their produce it will be at the exact temperature they require, giving them enough time to sell on to their end clients for processing. We’re dealing in huge volumes such as 400 kg of prawn orders, so we cannot afford to lose the stock and not be paid for it.”

The Savanna’s Managing Director, Lisa Gardshol commented “Sorbafreeze was recommended to us as the best solution for our online sales and UK wide deliveries and it has not let us down.”

Owner of the award-winning Buffalo Farm, Steve Mitchell, explains “We have previously used other packaging solutions for the products we courier across the UK, but we were never totally happy or confident that our products were going to arrive in pristine condition. With Sorbafreeze, no matter what happens in transit, we know for certain that the temperature will meet every requirement, there will be no leaks and most importantly the product will be in great condition.”

Stuart Williamson from Flying Fish Seafoods illustrates “We were using flaked ice to deliver our products but started receiving requests from customers saying they did not want to receive packages dripping with water. We therefore use Sorbafreeze pads to control the temperature and I am delighted at how it does exactly as we need it to do.”
