Lewis Pies is a family owned and run company making pies, pasties, breads, and cakes since 1936 and trade in just about everything, from supplying supermarkets, cafes, chip shops, and government contracts.
In addition, Lewis Pies began selling their luxury Wilfred’s range of pies on a popular shopping channel in 2019 which garnered a great response. The company already had a relationship with Sorbafreeze, working with them on smaller projects over the years; but when demand began to grow, Jason Davies, buyer at Lewis Pies decided that they needed something different.
The team were keen to move away from using polystyrene boxes and contacted Sorbafreeze for advice on which direction to take moving forward. Lewis Pies wanted their packaging to focus on enhancing customer experience, particularly as they were now in partnership with a shopping channel which prides itself on this.
The conclusion of the consultation was that the team would benefit from Sorbafreeze’s Fastfill foil lined boxes and Hydratek pre hydrated blocks – this option would greatly reduce time spent on assembly and would free up storage space.
After extended transit tests both Lewis Pies and their counterparts at the shopping channel were more than happy with the result of Sorbafreeze’s recommendations. The products arrived safely through the courier service and the presentation looked as high end as their customers expected.
Jason told us:
“The customers love the whole thing – A printed box within the Fastfill Box, 2 or 3 freezer pads – using a courier, customers usually get it within 24 hours, it’s all part of the experience”
Speaking of their customers, he added:
“They love the experience from start to finish, and when it arrives it’s in good condition – it works for us…We get a lot of response from customers – if they like it, they tell us and people often compliment the packaging”
Lewis Pies were steadily busy over the Christmas period at the end of 2019, as their luxury mince pies proved exceedingly popular with customers of the shopping channel. When the COVID-19 global pandemic hit in the middle of March this year, demand skyrocketed.
With lockdown in place across the UK more consumers shifted their normal buying habits; gone were the days of perusing the aisles of the supermarket at their leisure. With more people spending the majority of their time at home, the audience for teleshopping grew immensely, meaning a major increase in business for the team at Lewis Pies.
Similarly, over this period, the team at Sorbafreeze seen a spike in enquiries from both new and existing customers. At this time, the team at Lewis Pies needed more from their temperature-controlled packaging supplier than ever before; Jason stated:
